What's the difference in Shells and Plys?

  • Maple – The "go to" wood. 90% of all drums that we have produced in the last 15 years has been maple shells. Our standard setup is 6 ply maple toms and 8 ply bass drums. For snare drums we typically use either 6, 8, or 10 ply shells and can custom fabricate just about any other ply configuration. Maple shells produces a nice warm rich tone. Great overall resonance for live or studio applications. We highly recommend our Keller VSS maple shells.
  • Birch - Birch is often used for more studio settings. A strong bright tone is produced and shell pitches are typically higher. If you do not like a deep tone and prefer the higher range of drums, birch may be more up your alley.
  • Mahogany – Vintage! DHP offers mahogany shells in a variety of sizes. These shells tend to be bold and boomy. Mohan shells were first used in situations that never had mics and or amplification for drummers (IE: Buddy Rich's old Slingerland kits!) These shells are limited to a smaller variety of size configurations.
    • Adding Plies or Reinforcement Rings – The more plies we add to shells, the more the shell pitch is raised. Reinforcement rings can be added to shells to both raise the pitch as well as added long-term shell support and "roundness".
  • Acrylic – These shells our awesome! Acrylic, since the early Ludwig Vistalite days, produce a loud, warm, "rounded" sound. Acrylic shells are not made out of wood and come in a wide variety of finishes and we can custom tint shells and your creativity could be endless! One word of caution though: though acrylic shells are great looking and sounding, one must be more cautious of their wear and tear and handling. Being that they are a synthetic material, you must be careful in handling on the road and cautious of cracking.
  • Hybrid – These bad boys feature wood and acrylic mixed into one. Most case we use wood on the "edges" and acrylic in the center. The quality of sound of these shells usually is a bit brighter do to the fact that the "edges" are typically 10 ply shells to balance out with the 10 ply equivalent acrylic. Hybrids can be quite costly, labor intensive, however produce a stunning look in any environment!
